As everyone learned in history class as children, Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 with three ships (Nia, Pinta and Santa Maria) to discover the New World. It measured about 60 feet (18 meters) in length and 18 feet (5.5 meters) in width. The Santa Maria was a small ship, by modern standards. But, they were prized for their speed and manoeuvrability. The Santa Maria was originally named La Gallega (The Galician) because built in Pontevedra, Galicia, in the north-west of Spain. The three boats of Christopher Columbus were called the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa Maria. The original Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage across the Atlantic were common trading vessels. None of the three were built for trans-oceanic exploration. The Santa Maria, along with the La Nina and La Pinta, were part of Columbus's expedition in 1492, which explored islands in the Caribbean in an attempt to find a westward passage to Asia. The Santa Maria was owned by Juan de la Cosa, a cartographer, conquistador and explorer, who sailed with Columbus on the first three voyages (1492, 1493, and 1498).Īlthough not well known, all three ships were bought used and may have even been third-hand. ![]() The other two were named the La Nina (The Girl) and La Pinta (The Painted One).
